Crypto casinos in Canada: BTC, ETH, USDT and LTC payments explained
Crypto moves money to a casino without a bank in between. You pay a network fee, carry price risk, and a sent transfer can't be reversed. The CRA counts gambling with crypto as a disposition.
Short answer
At a crypto casino you send coins from your own wallet to an address the casino gives you, and withdrawals come back the same way. Bitcoin adds a block about every 10 minutes and casinos wait for one or more confirmations; Ethereum produces a block every 12 seconds. Every transfer pays a network fee, prices can move while your money sits in the casino, and the Bitcoin.org guide is plain about it: a transaction “cannot be reversed”. For tax, the CRA lists gambling among the ways you dispose of crypto, which can create a capital gain or loss.
Crypto makes large, fast deposits easy. Set a limit in dollars before you send anything: responsible gambling.
The four coins casinos list most
| Coin | How confirmation works | Fee mechanics | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin (BTC) | A new block about every 10 minutes on average. Bitcoin.org recommends 6 confirmations for high-value transfers. | You choose a fee; a low fee means the first confirmation can take much longer. | Price swings; slow when the network is busy |
| Ether (ETH) | Time is split into 12-second slots, one block per slot. | Gas used × (base fee + priority fee). The base fee is burned. | Price swings; fees rise with congestion |
| Tether (USDT) | Depends on the network: Ethereum (ERC-20), Tron (TRC-20), Solana, TON and others. | On Ethereum you pay gas in ETH. On Tron you pay in Bandwidth and Energy, and TRX is burned if you don’t hold enough. | Sending on the wrong network; CAD/USD exchange rate |
| Litecoin (LTC) | Target block time of 2.5 minutes | You choose a fee, as with Bitcoin. | Price swings |
Casinos set how many confirmations they wait for before crediting a deposit. At 10 minutes per block, a casino that waits for 3 Bitcoin confirmations credits you after about 30 minutes on average, longer if your fee was low.
Network choice: the mistake that loses money
USDT exists on several networks. Tether lists Ethereum (ERC-20), Tron (TRC-20), Solana, TON, Avalanche and others, and no longer supports some older ones such as Omni. An address on one network is not interchangeable with another. Before you send, check that the network chosen in your wallet is exactly the network the casino’s deposit page names. If they differ, the coins may not arrive, and since crypto transfers can’t be reversed, recovery depends entirely on the casino’s goodwill.
On Tron, each account gets 600 free Bandwidth points a day, but USDT transfers are smart contract calls that also need Energy, which has no free quota. If you don’t hold staked TRX for Energy, the fee is paid by burning TRX. Keep a little TRX in the wallet or the transfer fails.
How a deposit works
- Buy the coin on a Canadian exchange registered with FINTRAC as a money services business (crypto dealers serving Canadians must register), and move it to a wallet you control.
- In the casino cashier, pick the coin and the network. Copy the deposit address and, if shown, the memo or tag.
- Send a small test amount first if the amount is large. Paste the address; don’t type it.
- Wait for the confirmations the casino requires. The balance is credited in coin or converted to dollars, depending on the casino.
How a withdrawal works
- Verify your casino account. Licensed casinos check ID and address before payouts, crypto included.
- Enter your wallet address and pick the network. Double-check both.
- The casino approves, then broadcasts the transaction; the network fee is deducted or charged separately.
- Coins arrive after the network confirms. To get dollars, sell on an exchange and withdraw to your bank, which adds the exchange’s fees.

Volatility: what a price move does to a balance
Suppose you deposit C$200 worth of Bitcoin and your balance stays in BTC. If the price drops 5% before you withdraw, the same coins are worth C$200 × 0.95 = C$190, even if you won nothing and lost nothing at the tables. A 5% rise makes it C$210. Some casinos convert deposits to a dollar balance and back at withdrawal; then the conversion spread is the cost instead.
Stablecoins such as USDT track the US dollar, so in Canadian dollars they still move with the exchange rate. Several large platforms stopped offering USDT to Canadians after the Canadian Securities Administrators set rules for stablecoins in 2023.
Crypto and the CRA
For recreational players, gambling winnings are generally not taxable in Canada. Crypto adds a separate rule. The CRA’s guidance lists gambling among the ways you dispose of crypto-assets, together with selling, trading and paying for goods. A disposition can create a capital gain or loss: the coin’s value when you used it minus what it cost you.
Example: you bought coins for C$500, and they were worth C$700 when you sent them to a casino. That is a C$200 capital gain. Half of a capital gain is included in income, so C$100 is added to your taxable income for the year. The proposed increase of the inclusion rate to two-thirds was cancelled, so the 50% rate stands. Keep a record of each transfer’s date, amount and value in dollars. Details: are gambling winnings taxable in Canada.
What our test showed

- Withdrawals can be fast once the casino approves
- Large limits at many casinos
- Transfers can’t be reversed; a wrong address or network can mean lost funds
- Price moves change your balance’s value
- Network and exchange fees on every move
- Extra tax record-keeping under CRA rules

Questions
How long does a crypto casino deposit take?
It depends on the coin and on how many confirmations the casino requires. Bitcoin adds a block about every 10 minutes; Ethereum every 12 seconds. A low fee can delay Bitcoin’s first confirmation considerably.
Can I get my crypto back if I sent it to the wrong address?
Usually not. Bitcoin.org says a transaction can’t be reversed and can only be refunded by the person who received it.
Do I pay tax when I gamble with crypto?
The winnings themselves are generally not taxed for recreational players, but the CRA treats gambling with crypto as a disposition, which can create a capital gain or loss.
Which coin is cheapest to use?
It varies with network demand. Compare the casino’s withdrawal fee and the network fee on the day, and remember the exchange fee to convert back to dollars.
