Apple Pay casinos in Canada: deposits yes, withdrawals elsewhere

Apple Pay is a way to use the card already in your Wallet. In Canada it can pay a casino, but it can't receive a payout.

Short answer

Apple Pay at a casino is a card payment: it charges the debit or credit card stored in your iPhone’s Wallet. It works for deposits where the casino and its payment processor accept it. It can’t take a payout in Canada, because Apple’s person-to-person money service (Apple Cash) is available only in the US; withdrawals go by Interac, bank transfer or an e-wallet instead. Use a debit card. Banks such as TD treat gambling on a credit card as a cash advance, with a fee and interest from day one.

One tap makes deposits fast. A casino deposit limit slows them down when you need it: responsible gambling.

How Apple Pay works with a casino

Apple Pay doesn’t hold money. It passes a token for a card in your Wallet to the merchant’s payment processor, and the charge lands on that card. So the real questions are which card you use and whether the casino’s processor accepts Apple Pay.

Apple’s acceptable use guidelines for merchants don’t name gambling as a prohibited category. They do exclude payments that violate any law, and transfers of currency, including crypto, unless Apple approves. In practice, acceptance depends on the casino’s processor and on the bank that issued your card. Some issuers decline gambling transactions.

Most large Canadian banks and many credit unions support Apple Pay: RBC, TD, BMO, CIBC, Scotiabank, National Bank, Desjardins, Tangerine, ATB, Vancity, Servus, Coast Capital, Koho and Neo, among others on Apple’s list. Check that your card appears in Wallet before you go to a casino cashier.

Debit card or credit card

This choice decides what the deposit costs.

A credit card in Apple Pay is still a credit card. TD’s cardholder agreement treats “cash-like” transactions as cash advances and lists gaming transactions, including betting and lottery tickets, as examples. ATB lists online gambling the same way. A cash advance usually has a fee and interest from the day of the transaction, with no grace period. On a C$100 deposit, a cash advance fee of a few dollars plus daily interest makes the deposit cost more than C$100.

A debit card in Apple Pay charges your bank account. Interac says Interac Debit works for in-app and online payments through Apple Pay at participating merchants; your Visa Debit or Debit Mastercard can also be used. Whether a given casino accepts it is something we check in the cashier.

How a deposit works

  1. Open the casino cashier on your iPhone, iPad or Mac in Safari, and choose Apple Pay.
  2. Enter the amount. The Apple Pay sheet shows the card that will be charged; switch it to your debit card if needed.
  3. Confirm with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
  4. The casino credits your balance once the processor confirms.

How you get paid instead

Because Apple Pay can’t receive money in Canada, the casino needs a second method for the payout. Usually that is Interac e-Transfer, a bank transfer or an e-wallet. Many casinos require that you withdraw to a method you used to deposit. If Apple Pay was your only deposit method, the casino will ask which method to use, and may ask you to verify that bank account first.

To avoid a delay, add the payout method in your casino account before you request the first withdrawal, and complete the ID check. Measured payout times: fast payout casinos. The usual payout route is Interac e-Transfer.

Questions

Can I withdraw casino winnings to Apple Pay in Canada?

No. Receiving money with Apple Pay requires Apple Cash, which Apple offers only in the US. Casinos pay Canadians by Interac, bank transfer or e-wallet.

Does Apple ban gambling payments?

Apple’s merchant guidelines don’t list gambling as prohibited. Acceptance depends on the casino’s payment processor and on your card issuer, and some issuers block gambling.

Will my credit card charge a cash advance fee?

Very likely. TD and ATB, for example, treat gambling transactions as cash-like and charge them as cash advances. Use a debit card.

Can I use Apple Pay on Android or Windows?

No. Apple Pay works on Apple devices. On Android, the equivalent is Google Pay, which Google allows for gambling only in limited regions: see pay by mobile casinos.
