Best payout online casinos in Canada: RTP explained

A casino's "payout rate" comes down to which RTP versions of its games it runs. Here is the maths, with examples, and how to read a slot's RTP in its info screen before you play.

Short answer

A casino pays out more when it runs the higher-RTP versions of its games. Many slots come in several RTP settings, and the casino chooses one. A 96% slot keeps C$4 of every C$100 wagered on average; a 92% version of the same slot keeps C$8, twice as much. You can see which version you are playing in the game’s info or rules screen. No RTP makes you win: it is a long-run average.

RTP and house edge

RTP (return to player) is the share of all money wagered on a game that it pays back to players over a very large number of rounds. The house edge is the rest:

House edge = 100% − RTP

Your expected loss is the total you wager times the house edge. Total wagered is not your deposit: every spin counts, including spins paid with earlier winnings.

96%4%C$8C$40
94%6%C$12C$60
92%8%C$16C$80

These are averages. In one session of 200 spins, the result can be far above or below them, especially on high-volatility slots. RTP tells you the price of playing over time, not what will happen tonight.

Why RTP matters more with a bonus

Wagering requirements make you bet the bonus many times, so the house edge applies to a much larger amount. Take a C$100 bonus with 35x wagering: you must wager C$3,500.

  • At 96% RTP, the expected loss on C$3,500 is C$140.
  • At 94% RTP, it is C$210.

In both cases the expected loss is larger than the C$100 bonus, and the lower RTP version makes it C$70 worse. Try your own numbers in the calculator on our bonus page.

The same slot, different payouts

Game providers often certify one slot at several RTP settings, for example a default version around 96% and lower versions a few points below. The game looks and plays the same. The difference is in how often and how much it pays over time. The casino picks the version when it adds the game.

So the same title can be a 96% game at one casino and a 92% game at another. On C$1,000 wagered, that is C$40 against C$80 expected loss.

How to check a slot’s RTP

  1. Open the game in real-money mode at the casino you play at. Demos on other sites may run a different version.
  2. Open the menu, the “i” icon or the paytable, and go to the game rules.
  3. Look for “theoretical RTP”, “return to player” or “expected payback”. Some games list a second figure for the bonus buy feature or for jackpot contributions.
  4. Compare it with the default RTP the provider publishes. If the casino’s figure is lower, it runs a reduced version.
  5. Take a screenshot with the date if you want to keep a record.

If the rules screen shows no RTP at all, treat that as a warning sign.

Table games: fixed maths

Table games have no RTP settings to choose: the edge comes from the rules.

  • European roulette has 37 pockets and pays 35 to 1 on a single number. House edge: 1/37 = 2.70%.
  • American roulette adds a double zero: 38 pockets, same payouts. House edge: 2/38 = 5.26%.
  • Blackjack’s edge depends on the table rules and on how you play. See blackjack.

How we rate “payout” at a casino

In each review, we open three popular slots in real-money mode and record the RTP each one shows, and compare it with the provider’s default. A casino that runs reduced versions loses points in Games and Software, and we say which games. We also time a real withdrawal, because a high RTP is worth little if the casino is slow to pay: see fast payout casinos.

FAQ

Which online casino has the best payout in Canada?

The one that runs the highest-RTP versions of the games you play, and pays withdrawals on time. Check the RTP in each game’s info screen; our reviews list what we found.

Does a higher RTP mean I will win?

No. It means you lose less on average over a long time. Any single session can go either way.

Is a casino's advertised payout percentage reliable?

Only if it says how it was measured, over what period and by whom. The RTP in each game’s rules is more useful, because it applies to the exact game you play.

Are RTP and volatility the same?

No. RTP is the average return. Volatility is how uneven the wins are: high-volatility slots pay rarely but bigger. Two slots with the same RTP can feel very different.
