Casino bonus codes in Canada: how they work and how we check them

A code changes the offer; the games keep the same odds. Set a deposit limit before you use one: responsible gambling.

How bonus codes work

Casinos use codes to track where a player came from and to give different groups different offers. There are three places you might enter one:

• the registration form, in a field called “promo code” or “bonus code”;
• the cashier, when you make a deposit;
• the promotions or bonus page, where you activate an offer after logging in.

The code only activates the offer. All the usual terms still apply: wagering, maximum bet, maximum cashout, eligible games and expiry. Read the terms of the offer the code gives you, not the terms of the casino’s main welcome bonus. They are often different.

Many casinos run offers without any code: the bonus is applied when you tick a box at deposit. If a card on this page says “No code needed”, there is nothing to type.

Why codes stop working

A code found on a forum or an old page fails for one of these reasons:

• the campaign ended or reached its limit of uses;
• the code is for new players and your account already exists, or the reverse;
• the code is limited to players from certain countries or provinces;
• the code requires a minimum deposit and yours was lower;
• another bonus is already active, and the casino allows only one at a time.

When a code fails at deposit, the deposit usually goes through without the bonus. Contact support before you play the balance; once you place a bet, most casinos won’t add the bonus later.

How we check a code

We test each code on a real account, and we record what happened:

1. We enter the code exactly as shown, at the step the casino asks for it.
2. We screenshot the offer the code produced and its terms: wagering, cap, maximum bet, expiry.
3. Where the offer needs a deposit, we make the minimum deposit with a Canadian payment method and note the fee.
4. We play through and request a withdrawal, then record the result: paid, lost during wagering, or blocked.
5. We repeat the code check at least every 30 days. A code that fails is removed the same day; a code not re-checked within 30 days is hidden automatically.

The date on each card is the last day the code worked for us. If it fails for you, the terms may have changed since; tell us and we will retest.

What a code is worth: an example

Suppose a standard welcome bonus is 100% up to C$100 at 40x wagering on the bonus, and a code gives 100% up to C$100 at 30x instead. On a C$100 deposit with a 96% RTP slot:

• standard: 40 × C$100 = C$4,000 of bets; average cost C$4,000 × 0.04 = C$160;
• with code: 30 × C$100 = C$3,000 of bets; average cost C$3,000 × 0.04 = C$120.

The code saves C$1,000 of required bets and C$40 of average loss, though in both cases the average cost is still higher than the C$100 bonus. A code that lowers wagering is worth more than one that adds spins at the same 40x. Check the result with the calculator on the bonuses page.
