Casino apps in Canada: native apps, web apps and APK safety
Apple and Google allow real-money casino apps only from operators licensed where the app is used. That is why most offshore casinos offer a web app instead. Here is what that means for your phone.
Short answer
In Canada, Apple and Google list real-money casino apps only from operators that hold the right licence where the app is used. Outside Ontario and Alberta, Google Play allows such apps only from government operators. So the casinos we review mostly have no store app: you play in the mobile browser, or add the site to your home screen as a web app. If a casino offers an Android APK file to install directly, it has not been through Google Play’s review, so treat it with caution.

App Store and Google Play rules in Canada
Apple’s App Store Review Guidelines (section 5.3.4) say real-money gaming apps, including casino games and sports betting, must have the necessary licensing and permissions in the locations where the app is used, must be geo-restricted to those locations, and must be free on the App Store. Section 5.3.3 says apps may not use in-app purchase to buy credit for real-money gaming.
Google Play allows gambling apps only in listed countries, after the developer applies and shows a valid licence. Its country list for Canada is split by province:
| Where | What Google Play allows |
|---|---|
| Ontario | Online casino and sports betting apps; lotteries from government operators only |
| Alberta | Online casino and sports betting apps |
| All other provinces | Casino games, sports betting and lotteries from government operators only |
In practice: outside Ontario and Alberta, the store apps you will find are from the provincial operators, such as BCLC’s PlayNow apps. An offshore casino cannot meet either store’s licensing rule for those provinces.
Native app or web app?
| Native store app | Mobile site or web app (PWA) | |
|---|---|---|
| How you get it | App Store or Google Play | Open the casino in your browser; optionally “Add to Home Screen” |
| Reviewed by Apple or Google | Yes | No, but nothing is installed beyond a shortcut |
| Updates | Through the store | Automatic: you always load the current site |
| Phone permissions | Asked at install or first use | Limited to what the browser allows |
| Available for offshore casinos in Canada | Generally no | Yes |
A web app saved to your home screen looks like an app and opens full screen, but it is the casino’s website running in your browser. For most players, that is the safest way to play an offshore casino on a phone: there is no file to install and no extra permissions.
APK downloads: how to judge one
Some casinos offer an Android app as an APK file from their own website. Installing it means switching on “install unknown apps” for your browser, which skips Google Play’s review. Google Play Protect still checks apps from other sources on your device and may ask to scan an app it has not seen before, but that is a smaller safeguard than store review.
Download only from the casino's own domain
Check that the link is on the same address you verified in the licence register. Never install an APK sent by chat, email or social media.
Read what it asks for
A casino app has no reason to read your SMS, contacts or call log, or to control accessibility settings. If it asks, uninstall it.
Switch unknown apps off again
After installing, turn “install unknown apps” off for your browser, and keep Play Protect on.
If you are unsure, use the mobile site. You lose nothing in games or payments, and you avoid the install risk.
What we test on mobile
- Sign-up, deposit and withdrawal on a phone.
- Whether limits and self-exclusion can be set from the mobile site.
- Whether live dealer tables and the slots we played load and stay stable on mobile data.
- For any APK: where it is hosted and what permissions it asks for.

FAQ
Is there a real-money casino app in Canada?
Yes, from operators licensed where you are: registered operators in Ontario and Alberta, and provincial operators such as PlayNow elsewhere. Offshore casinos generally offer a mobile site instead.
Why can't I find this casino in the App Store?
Apple requires real-money gaming apps to be licensed in each location where they are used. An offshore casino is not licensed by your province, so it cannot list a Canadian app.
Is a casino APK safe?
It can be, but it has not been reviewed by Google Play. Download only from the casino’s verified domain, check the permissions, and keep Play Protect on. The mobile site is the lower-risk choice.
Do casino apps pay out faster?
No. Withdrawals go through the same cashier and the same checks, whether you request them in an app or on the website. See fast payout casinos.
