Online casino sign-up bonuses in Canada: what they cost to clear
A sign-up bonus is a loan of play money with conditions. Here is how to work out what an offer is worth before you deposit.
Short answer
A sign-up bonus adds money or spins to your first deposit, but you can’t withdraw it until you have bet it a set number of times. A C$100 match at 35x wagering on the bonus means C$3,500 of bets. At 96% RTP that costs C$140 on average, more than the bonus itself. Read five things before you accept: wagering, max cashout, max bet, game weighting and expiry. We have not yet claimed and cashed out the offers in this list:.

How a sign-up bonus works
The usual offer is a deposit match: the casino adds a percentage of your first deposit as bonus money, often with free spins on top. A 100% match on C$100 gives you C$100 of your own money plus C$100 of bonus money. The bonus money sits in a separate balance, or it locks your whole balance until you meet the wagering requirement.
Wagering (also called playthrough or rollover) is the total you must bet before the bonus turns into cash you can withdraw. It is written as a multiple: 35x, 40x, 50x. The detail that matters most is what the multiple applies to:
- bonus only: 35x on a C$100 bonus is C$3,500 of bets;
- deposit plus bonus: 35x on C$100 + C$100 is C$7,000 of bets, twice as much for the same headline.
Both versions appear in casino terms, often on the same site for different offers. The headline banner almost never says which one applies, so read the bonus terms page.
A worked example with the real cost
Every bet on a slot returns, on average, its RTP (return to player). At 96% RTP the house keeps 4% of everything you bet over the long run. So the average cost of clearing a bonus is the wagering total times the house edge.
| Offer | Wagering total | Average loss at 96% RTP | Bonus left on average |
|---|---|---|---|
| C$100 bonus, 35x bonus | 35 × C$100 = C$3,500 | C$3,500 × 0.04 = C$140 | C$100 − C$140: nothing |
| C$100 bonus, 35x deposit + bonus | 35 × C$200 = C$7,000 | C$7,000 × 0.04 = C$280 | nothing, and C$180 of your deposit gone on average |
| C$100 bonus, 20x bonus | 20 × C$100 = C$2,000 | C$2,000 × 0.04 = C$80 | C$100 − C$80 = C$20 |
| C$100 bonus, 20x bonus, 97% RTP slot | C$2,000 | C$2,000 × 0.03 = C$60 | C$100 − C$60 = C$40 |
These are averages. Single sessions swing a lot, especially on high-volatility slots: some players finish wagering with a big balance, most bust before they finish. The table tells you which offers are worth the time on average. Low wagering and a high-RTP game matter more than the size of the headline number.

Five rules that void bonus winnings
A cap on what you can withdraw
Some bonuses cap the cash you can take out of them, for example at a multiple of the bonus or a fixed amount. Anything you win above the cap is removed when you withdraw. Look for “maximum cashout” or “maximum conversion” in the terms.
One big spin can cancel the bonus
While a bonus is active, the terms set a maximum bet per spin or per round. A single bet above it can void the bonus and everything won with it, even if the casino software let you place the bet.
Table games count for less
Slots usually count 100% towards wagering. Blackjack, roulette and live games often count 10% or less, or nothing. At 10%, C$100 bet on blackjack counts as C$10 towards the requirement.
The clock runs from the moment you accept
Most bonuses must be cleared within a fixed number of days. If time runs out, the bonus and the winnings tied to it are removed. Check the deadline against how much you can bet in that time.
ID check before the first payout
Licensed casinos verify your identity before they pay out. Have a photo ID and a recent proof of address ready, and use a payment method in your own name. A mismatch can delay or cancel a withdrawal.
Types of bonuses and where to read more
Each bonus type has its own catch. These pages explain each one with the same math:
- No deposit bonuses: small credits or spins with no payment, usually with a low cashout cap.
- Free spins: the value is the spin size times the number of spins, often far less than the headline.
- Bonuses for existing players: reloads, cashback and loyalty offers.
- No wagering bonuses: smaller offers where winnings are paid as cash.
- Bonus codes: how codes work and how we check that they still work.
- Crypto no deposit bonuses: the same rules plus exchange rates and network fees.
Small deposits often don’t qualify for a bonus at all. If you plan to start with C$10 or less, read minimum deposit casinos first.
Questions
Can I withdraw a sign-up bonus straight away?
No. It is money you can only bet until the wagering requirement is met. On average the house edge on the required bets costs more than the bonus when wagering is 35x or higher on a 96% RTP slot.
Can I refuse a bonus?
At most casinos, yes: there is a checkbox or a “no bonus” option at deposit, or you can ask support to remove it before you play. Without a bonus your deposit is plain cash and you can withdraw it at any time, subject to the casino’s own rules on deposits that were not played through. Check the terms.
Why do bonuses need a higher minimum deposit?
Casinos often set a separate minimum for the bonus, higher than the cashier minimum. A deposit below it is accepted but gets no bonus. The bonus terms state the figure.
Do I pay tax on bonus winnings?
For recreational players in Canada, gambling winnings are generally not taxed. The rules for professional gamblers and for crypto differ: see are gambling winnings taxable in Canada.
What happens if I withdraw before I finish wagering?
Usually the bonus and any winnings made with it are forfeited. Some casinos let you withdraw your remaining real-money balance and lose only the bonus part. The terms explain which balance is used first.
