Online blackjack in Canada: the rules that change the odds
Blackjack has the lowest house edge in the casino if you play basic strategy at a table with good rules. A single rule, 6:5, can quadruple it.
Short answer
With basic strategy, blackjack’s house edge is about 0.4% to 0.6%, depending on the table rules. The one rule to check first is the payout on a natural: 3:2 pays C$15 on a C$10 blackjack, 6:5 pays C$12, and Wizard of Odds puts the cost of 6:5 at 1.39 percentage points. Dealer hitting soft 17 adds 0.22 points, no doubling after a split 0.14, the European no-hole-card rule 0.11. Insurance is a bad bet: about 7.7% against you. Read the table rules screen before you sit down. Our notes:.
A low edge still adds up over many hands. Set a limit for the session: responsible gambling.
Rules that change the house edge
These figures from Wizard of Odds show how each rule changes your expected return, in percentage points of each bet. A minus sign is bad for you.
| Rule | Effect on the player |
|---|---|
| Blackjack pays 6:5 instead of 3:2 | −1.39% |
| Dealer hits soft 17 | −0.22% |
| No doubling after a split | −0.14% |
| European no hole card (dealer takes the second card after you act) | −0.11% |
| Late surrender allowed | +0.08% |
| Re-splitting aces allowed | +0.08% |
| Early surrender against a 10 | +0.31% |
| Early surrender against an ace | +0.39% |
| 6 decks instead of 8 | +0.02% |
| 4 decks instead of 8 | +0.07% |
| 2 decks instead of 8 | +0.19% |
| 1 deck instead of 8 | +0.48% |
For reference, Wizard of Odds gives 0.43% for Atlantic City rules and about 0.62% for six-deck European no-hole-card tables. A table with 6:5 and soft 17 hits adds 1.39 + 0.22 = 1.61 points to whatever the rest of its rules give.
3:2 versus 6:5 in dollars
On a C$10 bet, a natural blackjack pays C$15 at 3:2 and C$12 at 6:5: C$3 less each time. It sounds small because naturals are not frequent, but over a session it is the biggest cost in the game.
Cost per hour = hands per hour × stake × house edge. At 60 hands an hour and C$10 a hand:
- good rules, 0.5% edge: 60 × C$10 × 0.005 = C$3.00 an hour;
- same table with 6:5: 60 × C$10 × (0.005 + 0.0139) = C$11.34 an hour.
Same game, same stake, almost four times the cost. Live tables deal fewer hands an hour than RNG tables, which lowers the hourly cost at the same edge.
Basic strategy in plain words
Basic strategy is the mathematically best play for each of your totals against each dealer up-card. It is published as a chart for each rule set. A few rules from it cover most hands:
- Stand on hard 17 or more. Hit hard 8 or less.
- With hard 12 to 16, stand if the dealer shows 2 to 6 (except hit 12 against a 2 or 3), and hit if the dealer shows 7 or higher.
- Double on 11 against most dealer cards, and on 10 against 2 to 9.
- Always split aces and 8s. Never split 10s or 5s.
- Don’t take insurance or even money.
Use the chart for the exact rules at your table; small rule changes switch a few decisions. Most online casinos allow a chart on screen while you play.
Why insurance loses
When the dealer shows an ace, insurance lets you bet half your stake that the dealer has blackjack. It pays 2:1. With a large shoe, the chance that the hidden card is a 10-value card is about 4 in 13, since 16 of every 52 cards are 10s, jacks, queens or kings.
Average result per C$1 of insurance = (2 × 4 − 1 × 9) ÷ 13 = −1 ÷ 13 = −C$0.077, a house edge of about 7.7%. That is many times the edge on the main hand. “Even money” on your own blackjack is the same bet under another name.
Online blackjack variants
- RNG blackjack: a software shoe, usually reshuffled every hand. Fast, so watch the hourly cost.
- Live blackjack: a real dealer and shoe on video, with seat limits per table.
- Infinite Blackjack (Evolution): unlimited seats, all players share the dealer’s cards, a Six Card Charlie rule and four side bets (Any Pair, 21+3, Hot 3, Bust It). RTP:.
Side bets carry their own, usually higher, house edge. The help screen lists them. Free demos:.

Questions
What is the house edge in online blackjack?
About 0.4% to 0.6% with basic strategy at a table that pays 3:2, depending on the other rules. A 6:5 payout adds about 1.39 points.
Can I count cards online?
Not at RNG tables, which usually reshuffle every hand. At live tables the shoe is cut deep and reshuffled, which limits any advantage, and casinos can close accounts for advantage play.
Should I take insurance?
No. Insurance carries a house edge of about 7.7% with a large shoe, far more than the main hand.
Does blackjack count towards bonus wagering?
Usually at a low rate, such as 10%, or not at all. At 10%, C$100 of blackjack bets counts as C$10. Check the terms: casino bonuses.
