No deposit bonuses in Canada: what they really pay

A no deposit bonus lets you play without paying in. The catch is in the cashout cap and the wagering, and we show both with numbers.

Short answer

A no deposit bonus gives you a small credit or a batch of free spins when you open an account, without a payment. It can pay out, but the amounts are small: most offers cap what you can withdraw and set high wagering. A C$20 credit at 40x needs C$800 of bets, and at 96% RTP the average cost of those bets is C$32, more than the credit. Our own results:.

Treat a no deposit bonus as a free demo with a small chance of cash at the end. Set limits before you play: responsible gambling.

How no deposit bonuses work

There are two common forms. A free chip is bonus money credited to your account, for example C$10 or C$20. Free spins are a set number of spins at a fixed value on one named slot; whatever they win is credited as bonus money. In both cases the result is bonus money, not cash, until you meet the wagering requirement.

Casinos attach three limits to almost every no deposit offer:

  • wagering, usually higher than on deposit bonuses;
  • a maximum cashout, the most you can withdraw from the bonus whatever you win;
  • a short expiry, often counted in days.

Many casinos also ask you to make a first deposit before they pay out no deposit winnings, to confirm the payment method is yours. That rule sits in the general terms, not always in the bonus terms. Check both pages before you claim.

A worked example: C$20 free chip at 40x

Say the offer is a C$20 free chip with 40x wagering and a C$100 maximum cashout, played on a slot with 96% RTP.

  • Wagering total: 40 × C$20 = C$800 of bets.
  • Average loss on those bets: C$800 × (1 − 0.96) = C$800 × 0.04 = C$32.
  • Average balance at the end: C$20 − C$32 is below zero, so on average the credit is gone before wagering ends.

That is the average. In real play a few players hit a bonus round early and finish with more than C$100; the cap then cuts the payout to C$100. Most players run out of balance part way through. The offer gives you a chance at a small win, and the cap removes the rare big one.

Lower wagering changes the picture. At 10x the same C$20 needs C$200 of bets, with an average loss of C$200 × 0.04 = C$8, which leaves C$12 on average. That is why we list the wagering multiple first on every bonus card.

For free spins, enter the spin winnings as the amount (you will know it after the spins are played), or estimate it as spins × spin value × RTP.

Traps in no deposit terms

Max cashout

The cap is the real size of the offer

A cap of C$50 or C$100 is common on no deposit bonuses. If you win C$300, you are paid the cap and the rest is removed. Compare offers by the cap first, then by wagering.

Max bet

Small bets only while wagering

The terms set a maximum bet while the bonus is active. One spin above it can void the bonus and the winnings. Set your bet size before you start and don’t change it.

Game weighting

Some games don't count

Wagering usually counts in full on slots and partly or not at all on table and live games. Some slots are excluded entirely. The list of excluded games is in the bonus terms.

Expiry

Days, not weeks

No deposit offers often expire within a few days of activation. Unused free spins and uncleared bonus money are removed when the time runs out.

KYC

ID check, sometimes a deposit too

Before any payout the casino checks your ID and address. Some also require a deposit to verify the payment method. One account per person, household or IP address is a standard rule; a second account can cancel every bonus on both.

Questions

Can I win real money with a no deposit bonus?

Yes, but the amount is limited by the maximum cashout, and on average high wagering uses up the bonus before you finish. Treat any win as a bonus on top of a free trial.

Why do I have to deposit to withdraw a no deposit win?

Some casinos require one deposit to confirm that the payment method belongs to you before the first payout. It is a rule in the terms, so read it before you claim. If you don’t want to deposit, pick an offer without that rule.

Can I claim the same no deposit bonus twice?

No. Offers are limited to one per person, household, device or IP address. A second account is usually closed and its winnings voided.

Is a no deposit bonus worth it?

As a way to test a casino’s games and support before you pay in, yes. As a way to make money, no: the expected value is close to zero or below once wagering is applied.
