Sites like Stake: crypto casinos for Canadians and their risks

Stake is a crypto-first casino and sportsbook. Here is where it is not available, which crypto casinos work the same way, and what can go wrong when you gamble with crypto.

Short answer

Stake.com is a large crypto-focused online casino and sportsbook licensed outside Canada. It is not registered with iGaming Ontario, and Ontario is reported as a restricted location in its terms, so it is not a legal option there. “Sites like Stake” are casinos that take crypto deposits, pay out in crypto and offer in-house games such as dice, crash and plinko. Before you play with crypto, know the risks: the price can move fast, transfers cannot be reversed, and selling crypto can be taxable.

What Stake is, and where it is not available

Stake.com combines an online casino and a sportsbook, and is built around cryptocurrency deposits and withdrawals. It runs its own “Stake Originals” games next to slots and live tables from known providers.

  • Ontario: Stake is not in iGaming Ontario’s regulated market directory, so it is not legal for Ontario players. Reports say its terms list Ontario as a restricted location.
  • Alberta: since Alberta’s regulated market opened on July 13, 2026, only sites approved by the Alberta iGaming Corporation are legal there.
  • Other provinces: Stake, like other offshore casinos, is not licensed by the province. If something goes wrong, no Canadian regulator can help.

We do not review Stake and do not earn money from it. This page names it because many readers search for it.

What makes a site “like Stake”

  • Deposits and withdrawals in Bitcoin, Ethereum, stablecoins and other coins.
  • In-house games: dice, crash, plinko, mines. Many are “provably fair”: the site publishes a code (a hash) for each round before you play, so you can check afterwards that the result was not changed.
  • A sportsbook on the same account.
  • Rakeback or VIP programs that return a share of what you wager.

Provably fair proves the round was not altered. It does not change the house edge. Read how crash games work in our crash games guide and Plinko guide.

The risks of gambling with crypto

Price

Your balance moves with the market

Bitcoin.org says the price of a bitcoin can unpredictably rise or fall over a short time. A C$500 win paid in crypto can be worth less by the time you sell it.

Irreversible

No chargebacks

A Bitcoin transaction cannot be reversed; only the person who received it can send it back. A wrong address or wrong network means the money is lost.

Licence

Weaker oversight

Many crypto casinos hold licences from regulators with limited complaint handling, or none at all. Check the licence in the register before you deposit.

Tax

Selling crypto can be taxable

The CRA treats trading crypto for dollars or other crypto, or using it to pay, as a disposition. That can create a capital gain, separately from any gambling win.

Crypto is also not anonymous. Bitcoin.org notes that all transactions are stored publicly and permanently on the network.

Tax on crypto you gamble with

Recreational gambling winnings are generally not taxed in Canada. The crypto itself is another matter. If you buy 0.01 BTC for C$800 and deposit it when it is worth C$1,000, the CRA can treat that deposit as a disposition with a C$200 capital gain. The same applies when you sell crypto you withdrew. Keep the date, amount and Canadian-dollar value of every transaction. Details: gambling winnings and tax.

How to use a crypto casino more safely

  1. Check the licence in the regulator’s own register, with the exact website address. See the safest casinos checklist.
  2. Buy crypto on a platform registered in Canada.
  3. Send a small test deposit first, on the network the casino names (for example Bitcoin, not a wrapped token on another chain).
  4. Make a small withdrawal early, before you deposit more.
  5. Think in dollars. Set your limit in Canadian dollars and convert back when you finish.
  6. Expect identity checks before large withdrawals, even at sites that advertise “no KYC”. See verification at casinos.

FAQ

Is Stake legal in Canada?

Stake is not licensed by any province. It is not registered in Ontario’s regulated market, where only registered sites are legal. In other provinces it is an offshore site with no provincial oversight.

Can I use a VPN to play on Stake from Ontario?

No. Using a VPN to get around a casino’s location rules usually breaks its terms, and the casino can void winnings and close the account. In Ontario, use a registered site.

Are crypto casino winnings taxable?

The gambling win follows the normal rules: not taxed for recreational players. Exchanging or selling the crypto can create a taxable capital gain.

Are crypto withdrawals faster?

The blockchain transfer is often quick: Bitcoin blocks come about every 10 minutes on average. The casino’s approval and verification take longer, and converting to dollars is another step.
